Agriculture by Tim Shappart
Overall it is my job to
maintain a good food supply and good health for the populous of the space station.
First I will be using hydroponics to grow plants. Secondly we will be
bringing embryos of chickens, cows, and sheep for the needs of the dairy and meet food
groups on our spaceship. Also, for obvious reasons, we will be bringing seeds
of various kinds of plants, water, and soil to the space station.
The use of hydroponics in
our station will aid it greatly. It will require less space to start the growth
process of the plants as well as less soil. If the plants need more space they can
be planted in one of the orchards where they will have sufficient room.
There will be a
forest/crop/growth area used for a grazing area for the cows and sheep as well as field
for the crops to grow. There will be four facilities on each end, one for growth of
smaller plants, one for the storage of maintenance equipment, coops for chickens and small
animals, and finally a warehouse type of building for storing foods. This warehouse
will contain freezers to keep the food fresh. Also wastes will be shipped from the
water and sanitation chief to be used in compost heaps. As for labor in the fields,
automated robots will harvest the food when needed. There will be many of these
little grazing areas around the space station.
The distribution of the
foods will be quite simple. After the crops are harvested they will be sent to a
main distribution center via automated cars. After that they will be shipped to
grocery stores around the space station for consumption by the people living there.
